Tragic Loss Leads to Awareness: A Mother’s Story

A mother from Arizona is sharing her harrowing experience to bring attention to an often misunderstood condition. Her toddler daughter, Olive, passed away suddenly, leaving her family grappling for answers.

Aubrey Tenney, 32, remembers Olive as a vibrant child, full of life and curiosity. Nicknamed Ollie, she loved the water and approached everyone like a friend. “She was just truly a ray of light,” Aubrey explained. “She had such a wonderful personality and was always exploring and learning.”

On November 1, 2023, at just 18-and-a-half months old, Olive unexpectedly died. The autopsy was inconclusive, leading her family to seek awareness rather than definitive answers.

The First Incident

Aubrey, who also has a six-year-old son and one-year-old twins with her husband David, recounted shocking events leading up to Olive’s death. On July 4, during a vacation in California, Olive fell asleep in her aunt’s arms. Suddenly, her lips began turning blue. “My sister noticed something was off,” Aubrey said.

After some quick actions, Olive recovered. An urgent-care visit suggested she was fine, possibly just dehydrated. Back home, the pediatrician mentioned febrile seizures or dehydration as possible causes, though nothing was clear.

A Second Frightening Episode

Another incident occurred on September 2. After dinner, Aubrey noticed Olive having a seizure in her car seat. Olive was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a slight fever. The pediatrician explained febrile seizures are common, and the family chose to monitor Olive without further testing.

Tragedy Strikes

On the night of November 1, Aubrey received a distressing call from David. Olive wasn’t breathing. By the time they reached the hospital, efforts to revive Olive had failed. Doctors were unable to save her.

Searching for Understanding

In their quest for answers, Aubrey and David learned about Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC). This condition involves unexpected deaths in children without explanations, even after thorough investigation. Research points toward a potential link between SUDC and febrile seizures, though not every child with febrile seizures faces complications.

Spreading Awareness

Through TikTok, Aubrey shares Olive’s story to inform others. “I don’t want to create fear,” she affirmed. “It’s to raise awareness.” Olive’s life is celebrated within the family. On her birthday, they eat edamame, wear olive green, and keep Olive’s memory alive. “She is everywhere,” Aubrey reflected, noting olive motifs throughout their home and lives.
