Todd Blanche’s journey to becoming confirmed as attorney general concluded with a 50-49 Senate vote on Saturday. Formerly serving as acting attorney general since April, his confirmation followed key Republican support despite initial doubts. Blanche replaced Pam Bondi in this role following President Donald Trump’s dissatisfaction with her management of the Jeffrey Epstein files.
Senate Confirmation Challenges
Blanche’s nomination faced weeks of uncertainty. Concerns arose from both parties regarding his past as Trump’s personal lawyer and involvement in a contentious IRS settlement deal. The decisive vote occurred early Saturday morning, largely following party lines, with only two Republican senators voting against his confirmation.
Opposition to Blanche’s Confirmation
Democratic and independent senators opposed Blanche’s confirmation. Notable senators in this group included:
- Angela Alsobrooks (Maryland)
- Tammy Baldwin (Wisconsin)
- Debbie Stabenow (Michigan)
- Chuck Schumer (New York)
- Bernie Sanders (Vermont)
- Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts)
In addition, Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska also voted against Blanche. Collins expressed concerns about the politicization of the Justice Department under Blanche’s leadership, while Murkowski highlighted worries over his decisions during his term as acting attorney general.
Republican Fluctuations in Support
Republican Senators Bill Cassidy and Thom Tillis previously expressed opposition but ultimately backed Blanche. Their support came after assurances regarding the rescinding of a controversial $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund associated with a voided IRS lawsuit settlement.
Cassidy’s support was pivotal. He received encouragement from former attorney general William Barr, who assured that Blanche would maintain independence and not simply enforce Trump’s wishes.
Collins and Murkowski Stand Firm
Despite needing only one more vote for confirmation, Blanche failed to gain the support of Collins and Murkowski. Collins cited several objections, including issues related to IRS audits and promises made to anti-abortion groups, as her reasons for voting against him. Murkowski expressed distrust over the potential revival of the anti-weaponization fund and other decisions benefitting Alaska and the nation, recommending a more balanced attorney general.
Blanche’s Response to the Vote
After the Senate vote, Blanche expressed gratitude on the platform X. He thanked President Trump for trusting him to lead the Department of Justice and the Senate for their efforts in completing his confirmation.
