A couple from St. Clair Shores, Michigan, located in the suburbs of Detroit, faces serious charges after allegedly throwing an explosive device into their neighbor’s yard. According to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, Jason Showers, 45, and his wife, Megan Showers, 38, could receive decades in prison if convicted of the charges related to the incident that occurred on Monday.
Authorities reported that Megan Showers ignited the device, a red cylindrical object with the words ‘BYE BYE’ on it, before Jason Showers hurled it into the yard of their 72-year-old neighbor. The neighbor managed to extinguish the explosive, as confirmed by officials.
During a search of the Showers’ residence, law enforcement discovered firearms, ammunition, and materials used for making explosive devices. Prosecutor Peter Lucido emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, especially since they involve a senior community member. Lucido stated that the office is dedicated to safeguarding public safety and prosecuting cases where individuals are accused of endangering others.
The charges against Jason and Megan Showers include placing explosives near property and possessing bombs with unlawful intent, both felonies with a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. Jason Showers is also charged with being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a potential penalty of up to five years in prison.
Additionally, Jason faces two counts of felony firearm possession, each with a mandatory two-year sentence that must be served consecutively to the underlying felony if convicted. Due to his status as a habitual offender with at least four previous felony convictions, a life sentence is possible if he is found guilty of any of the four top charges.
The couple appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday. Their probable cause hearing is set for Aug. 14. The judge set a $100,000 cash-only bond for Jason Showers, who remains in custody at the Macomb County Jail. Should he post bond, he must wear a GPS tether and avoid contact with his wife and neighbor.
Megan Showers received a bond set at $20,000, with the condition that she could pay 10% through a bail bondsman. She is allowed to return to her marital home but cannot contact her husband or the neighbor.
