Search for New Army Secretary Begins After Dan Driscoll Resignation

The search for a new secretary of the Army has begun following Dan Driscoll’s resignation, leaving a pivotal leadership vacancy in the U.S. Army. Driscoll’s final day as Army secretary was Wednesday, after serving under President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He described his tenure as an honor.

The incoming Army secretary will face a service undergoing significant changes, especially as conflicts with Iran continue to impact military readiness.

Transformation Challenges

Driscoll and Sergeant Major Michael R. Weimer acknowledged Old Dominion University Army ROTC cadets with Meritorious Service Medals and Purple Hearts during a ceremony on March 22, 2026, following their heroism in a March 12 classroom shooting.

Army Undersecretary Mike Obadal might become acting secretary following Driscoll’s departure. Obadal, a former special operations officer and defense industry executive, has been increasingly visible at public events.

Deputy officials in the Trump administration routinely fill high-level positions after resignations or firings. This includes former Navy Under Secretary Hung Cao assuming the role of acting Navy secretary after John Phelan’s departure.

Candidates for Army Secretary

Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s chief spokesman and senior adviser to Hegseth, is a possible candidate, according to sources. Parnell, a former Army captain, gained attention for his leadership during the Afghan War.

Parnell’s political endeavors include a failed House run in 2020 and a 2021 Senate campaign in Pennsylvania, endorsed by Trump, which he suspended amidst personal controversy.

A senior official suggested Parnell is familiar with the Pentagon’s operations and has strong ties with General LeNeve, emphasizing his ability to support Army leaders effectively.

Loyalty and Experience

Another Pentagon official stated Parnell’s unwavering loyalty to the president, recalling Parnell’s presence at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, during a shooting incident.

Parnell’s relationship with Trump extends over many years, involving senior White House members as well.

Florida Rep. Brian Mast is also under consideration, serving as chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and having a 12-year Army career.

Controversies and Vision

Driscoll’s resignation followed disagreements with Hegseth over the Army’s transformation, with claims that Hegseth hindered progress, as previously reported.

Parnell defended Hegseth, praising his leadership and effect on military morale, recruitment, and readiness. He highlighted initiatives under Hegseth that prioritize standards, innovation, and service strength.

Tensions remain, as Democrats and some Republicans criticize Trump and Hegseth’s management strategy. Sen. Thom Tillis expressed concerns about leadership gaps, while Sen. Jack Reed accused Hegseth of prioritizing personal allegiance over competence.

Navy Secretary Phelan departed after disputes with Hegseth over shipbuilding strategies.

The White House directed inquiries to the Department of War regarding the ongoing discussions.

Fox News Digital contacted Parnell, Mast, the Army, and the Department of War for further comments.
