Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, representing New York, has thrown her support behind Angie Nixon, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Florida, who is set to face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in the November elections.
In her endorsement, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the need for leaders who will represent working families rather than catering to special interests. According to a statement from Nixon’s campaign, Ocasio-Cortez remarked, “At a time when working families are fighting tooth and nail to make ends meet while the Administration sells them out to corrupt special interests, we need to stand behind leaders who are accountable to working people and stand up to greedy corporations.”
Nixon, a state representative, has been highlighted as a candidate who stands against corporate political action committee (PAC) funding. Ocasio-Cortez added, “Angie Nixon will do just that – from fighting for universal healthcare and childcare to proposing a national rent freeze. Angie will be an exemplary fighter for the working families of Florida.” She noted Nixon’s grassroots approach to building community power as a key aspect of her appeal.
Following her endorsement, Nixon expressed appreciation, stating, “I’m honored to have the endorsement of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her support as we work towards a better future for Florida.” Nixon emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs of Floridians over those of wealthy interests.
The Senate contest follows a political shift, with Governor Ron DeSantis appointing Moody to a Senate seat last year. This vacancy arose when Marco Rubio left the role to become Secretary of State, before the conclusion of his term.
The endorsement serves as a boost to Nixon’s campaign efforts, reinforcing her commitment to fighting for comprehensive change and representation for neglected communities. Moody, backed by former President Donald Trump, faces Nixon in the upcoming election. Trump’s previous comments on social media criticized defeated Democratic primary candidate Alexander Vindman.
