School Safety: The Impact of Preventive Measures and Threat Assessment

School shootings, like the one in Santa Clarita, California, have heightened concerns about safety in schools across the United States. Administrators are exploring various strategies to prevent these tragedies, with many opting for visible security measures. Notably, at least eight states have enacted laws that require schools to conduct active shooter drills. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of these drills.

Active Shooter Drills and Their Impact on Children

Illinois has implemented a law mandating active shooter drills in schools. These drills usually involve students hiding in classrooms or evacuating the premises. While some parents appreciate the preparatory nature of these drills, others, like Dianne from Champaign, highlight their potential harm. Her daughter, Rory, who has autism and ADHD, became distressed after a “hard lockdown drill,” expressing fear and reluctance to return to school.

Melissa Brymer from the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress acknowledges these concerns but emphasizes that emergencies can occur unexpectedly. While drills might save lives, as per a Ball State University study, there is scant evidence supporting their effectiveness due to the rarity of such incidents.

Report Findings on School Security Measures

A report by the U.S. Secret Service analyzed incidents where students brought weapons to schools and excluded gang and drug-related cases. The findings indicated that although lockdown procedures were commonly implemented, they did not always prevent attacks. The report emphasizes the need for comprehensive preventive measures, involving teachers, staff, mental health professionals, and law enforcement.

Lina Alathari, the report’s lead author, suggests emphasizing prevention through multidisciplinary collaboration to address students’ distress before they resort to violence. Notably, many attackers experienced severe bullying over extended periods.

The Role of Threat Assessment

The Secret Service advocates for threat assessment as a proactive strategy, focusing on identifying students exhibiting concerning behaviors. Alathari highlights that a significant number of attackers displayed warning signs, such as threatening statements or social media posts.

“Tell my mom I love her,” one attacker posted on Instagram, along with an image of a gun. This 15-year-old student tragically shot four classmates and injured another before taking his own life.

Despite intervention efforts, such targeted attacks are rare, with an average of a few incidents annually among hundreds of thousands of schools. The Secret Service’s research underscores the importance of fostering strong school climates where students feel safe reporting warning signs to trusted adults.
