San Francisco Giants’ Pride Night Sparks Controversy

A planned celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride by the San Francisco Giants has resulted in controversy following last Friday’s game against the Chicago Cubs. The event at Oracle Park was labeled “Pride Night,” with the team providing players with special Pride caps. While most players wore these caps, pitcher Sam Hentges opted not to, and three pitchers, including Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker, inscribed Bible verses on their caps.

During the game, Giants pitcher Landen Roupp faced the Cubs in the first inning. His actions have raised concerns among fans, such as Arne Johnson, a longtime supporter and parent to two LGBTQ children. Johnson, who is part of Rainbow Families Action, expressed distress over these actions. “Every time Roupp or a pitcher gets on the mound, I wonder if I should cheer because they won’t reciprocate for my children,” Johnson said, emphasizing the broader implications of feeling unwelcome.

Johnson found the players’ actions deeply offensive. “We ask for players to support our children one night a year, and they couldn’t do it. This is something no one in the Bay Area should tolerate,” he stated. In response, the Giants released a statement acknowledging the hurt and anger caused, reaffirming their commitment to inclusivity and belonging.

Rainbow Families Action expressed disappointment with the statement, urging Giants fans to consider spending their money with organizations fully supportive of LGBTQ fans. Although no official boycott has been announced, Johnson suggested it could be on the horizon unless corrective measures are taken.

Johnson proposed the team engage with LGBTQ families and commit to educating players and making substantial changes to heal the hurt caused. KRON reached out to Major League Baseball regarding the Bible verses on the hats, which violate league rules, but did not receive a response before publication. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media Inc.
