Reflecting on Charlie Kirk’s Lasting Influence and Legacy

Reflecting on Charlie Kirk’s Lasting Influence and Legacy

In 2017, I encountered Charlie Kirk for the first time in a Los Angeles hotel lobby. Prior to meeting, I had reached out to him through email, suggesting a collaboration. Though initially dismissive, Charlie agreed to meet after some unfavorable media coverage. Upon meeting, I was struck by his towering height of 6’5” and his remarkable ability to maintain eye contact while seemingly observing everything around him.

Kirk, a young conservative leader, was focused and detested inefficiency. He dove straight into discussions and during those early meetings, I noticed his old-fashioned suit and shoes, indicative of a Midwestern practicality.

Despite being new to politics, Charlie’s earnest nature and work ethic impressed me. Together, we began a professional and personal partnership which flourished over the years.

In 2019, we launched “The Charlie Kirk Show.” It started as a weekly podcast and evolved rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Charlie’s dedication turned it into a nationally syndicated radio and later a successful TV program.

Charlie was frequently described by our team as a uniquely effective individual. Unlike many, he consistently turned intentions into outcomes. He aspired to influence young Americans, creating Turning Point USA (TPUSA) with limited resources and no clear roadmap. He expanded his efforts by founding initiatives like TPUSA Faith and Turning Point Action.

Charlie’s first years at TPUSA were financially strenuous, subsisting on modest speaking fees and the kindness of friends. As CEO and spokesman, he traveled extensively, living frugally without a regular paycheck. Eventually, financial support—often attributed to his faith—arrived at crucial times.

The demanding travel and relentless schedule impacted his health. Despite chronic back pain, Charlie remained committed, often delivering his best speeches under physical strain.

Kirk faced constant criticism and was occasionally blamed for political outcomes beyond his control. However, he persevered, using adversity to fuel his determination.

After significant electoral defeats, Charlie restructured efforts like “Chase the Vote,” dramatically improving conservative voter outreach, particularly in swing states like Arizona.

Charlie’s efforts on college campuses debunked misconceptions about conservative politics. His debates were widely viewed, shifting opinions ahead of the 2024 election, contributing to substantial youth support for Donald Trump.

Critics underestimated Kirk’s dedication to achieving seemingly impossible goals. He built a robust movement, brick by brick, countering prevailing cultural narratives. Even amid challenges, he maintained optimism and faith in America’s potential.

Marking the anniversary of Charlie Kirk’s passing, we remember his unwavering commitment and work ethic. His legacy inspires us to continue striving, aligning with one of his guiding principles: never surrender.

We miss you, Charlie.

Onward.
