Praise for Scotts Miracle-Gro
In a recent Oval Office address, President Donald Trump expressed admiration for Scotts Miracle-Gro. The lawn-and-garden company aided in restoring the White House grounds gratuitously. Trump commended the company for offering “the best grass you can get” for Washington, D.C. parks. “They do great grass. What can I tell you? I got to give them a plug because they did the White House for free,” he remarked. The president revealed that a “friend” made the offer for lawn replacement, to which he responded, ‘I’ll take it. How much?’ with the friend stating, ‘Free.’
According to a White House spokesperson, Davis Ingle, President Trump is donating time and resources to enhance the People’s House. Ingle remarked that past presidents had only dreamed of this project, and upon announcing the plan, numerous Americans and companies expressed a desire to contribute.
South Lawn Restoration
Following Trump’s comments, Scotts Miracle-Gro had earlier announced a $1 million contribution in cash, products, and technical assistance to the National Park Service. Their aim was to restore the South Lawn after the UFC Freedom 250 event held there. The restoration efforts included sod and a custom turfgrass blend, selected by Trump from eight options provided by Scotts Miracle-Gro. Jim Hagedorn, former chairman and CEO of Scotts, recognized the South Lawn as “a living piece of U.S. history.”
Records reveal that Scotts Miracle-Gro and affiliates contributed $770,496 during the 2024 cycle, including $500,000 to Make America Great Again Inc., a pro-Trump super PAC.
Glyphosate Concerns
Trump’s White House promotion relates to a prior executive order prioritizing supplies of glyphosate-based herbicides, which are vital for U.S. agriculture. Environmentalists are alarmed by this directive. Though Scotts was not named, it plays a significant role in marketing Monsanto’s consumer Roundup products in the U.S.
Bayer, associated with Monsanto, faces litigation over Roundup and glyphosate. They maintain that the product is safe. A Supreme Court ruling recently bolstered Monsanto in these legal battles, potentially blocking numerous lawsuits about its carcinogenic potential.
