PlayStation has revealed a significant change in its distribution model: starting January 2028, it will cease releasing physical discs for new games. Instead, games will be accessible only through digital platforms. The company describes this as a ‘natural direction’ to adjust to consumer trends, but the decision has not been universally welcomed.
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that new games will be offered via the PlayStation Store and other digital retailers. This shift aligns with the preferences of many users who increasingly favor digital access for gaming.
However, the announcement has stirred disappointment among some in the gaming community. Comments on their blog post label the news as ‘disappointing’ and ‘terrible.’ One gamer expressed concern, saying, ‘We literally own nothing now but licenses,’ calling the decision ‘horrible.’
This reaction mirrors the response to last month’s pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6, where Rockstar revealed that the physical edition would only include a code for a digital download.
PlayStation’s Official Statement
Sid Shuman, Senior Director for Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, explained the shift as part of the gaming industry’s broader transition from physical discs to digital formats.
‘This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,’ he stated.
‘This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today. We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.’
This is a developing story and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
