Knicks Owner James Dolan and Charles Oakley’s Legal Battle Continues

During the New York Knicks’ championship parade, team owner James Dolan took a verbal jab at Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Dolan questioned the mayor’s loyalty as a ‘real Knicks fan’ amid public disputes over watch party arrangements for the championship.

The legal issues involving former Knicks forward Charles Oakley and James Dolan remain unresolved. Oakley’s lawsuit against Dolan and Madison Square Garden (MSG) was dismissed for the third time. This legal saga traces back to February 2017 when Oakley clashed with security guards, leading to his ejection from MSG.

Feb. 8, 2017: Former Knicks player Charles Oakley exchanges words with a security guard during an NBA game.

Oakley faced arrest following the altercation, although charges were eventually dropped. He sued for false imprisonment and defamation, among other claims. The case was originally dismissed in 2020 and later revived in 2023 before being dismissed once more.

MSG released a statement, accusing Oakley’s lawyer, Douglas Wigdor, of pursuing baseless claims and announced intentions to pursue legal action against him. MSG stated to the New York Post:

“For more than nine years, Mr. Oakley’s lawyers have pursued claims they knew were false. Those claims have now been dismissed by the Court in their entirety — for a third time. We are pursuing legal action against Douglas Wigdor, and his unscrupulous law firm, to hold them accountable for years of frivolous litigation and their blatant abuse of the judicial system.”

A federal judge dismissed Oakley’s lawsuit, emphasizing it resembled a public relations effort rather than a legal claim. The dismissal occurred in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, with Judge Richard J. Sullivan ruling in 2020.

Oakley’s legal team expressed disappointment, believing a jury trial could resolve conflicting accounts. They remain hopeful the Second Circuit will offer a favorable decision in the future.

Despite the ongoing feud with Dolan, Oakley remains a dedicated Knicks supporter. He attended several road playoff games, witnessing New York’s recent NBA Championship victory. Oakley played for the Knicks for over a decade, contributing to the team’s journey to the NBA Finals in 1994.
