A tragic car accident claimed the life of Cameron Lyon, a 23-year-old teacher from Ohio. The incident occurred on September 6 in Fairfield County, involving a driver previously deported from the United States.
The Accident Details
Lyon died in a two-vehicle crash, reported by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the school district. Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, a 33-year-old Mexican national, faces charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and operating a vehicle without a valid license. The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. on U.S. Route 33 near U.S. Route 22 in Hocking Township.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol explained that a GMC Terrain traveling eastbound veered off the road, overcorrected, crossed into westbound lanes, and overturned. This led to the vehicle striking the Chevrolet Trax driven by Lyon. After the collision, the GMC caught fire.
Remembering Cameron Lyon
Lyon was an educator for fifth- and sixth-grade students at Crestline Exempted Village Schools. His tragic passing was confirmed in a heartfelt message shared with the school community. The school expressed sorrow for Lyon’s family, fiancée, students, colleagues, and all others affected by his loss.
Lyon recently graduated from Otterbein University. He became engaged this summer and was in the early stages of his teaching career. An online fundraiser reflected the family’s devastation and deep sense of loss.
After the accident, Lyon was taken to Fairfield Medical Center, where he passed away shortly. Abrielle Kerns, a passenger in his vehicle, suffered injuries and was hospitalized. She remains under medical care as she recovers from the crash. Kerns’ family has organized fundraising efforts to support her and Lyon’s loved ones.
Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez’s Background
The Department of Homeland Security reported that Uribe-Gonzalez entered the U.S. through Texas in January 2020. He received a final order of removal from an immigration judge and was deported in April 2020. His reentry to the country remains unclear. After his recent arrest, ICE requested his detainment before any possible release from the Fairfield County Jail.
Markwayne Mullin, DHS Secretary, expressed concern, highlighting that Lyon’s life was cut short by someone who should not have been in the country. Initially, bond for Uribe-Gonzalez was set at $5 million by a judge, but prosecutors later sought no bond based on the seriousness of the charges and public safety concerns. Prosecutor Kyle Witt indicated that the defendant’s lack of local ties added to the concerns.
