Newsom’s Potential Run: Impact of DOJ Investigation

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently revealed an ongoing Justice Department investigation, which he labels as political retaliation by President Donald Trump. Newsom suggests this action targets him due to his contemplation of a presidential candidacy. In a post, he claimed that federal agents have approached his family and friends seeking documents.

Newsom argues that the investigation is an abuse of power. He maintains he has nothing to hide and views the probe as an attempt to find a crime without any prior evidence. This mirrors Trump’s narrative of being targeted by a weaponized government, which he has used to solidify his base during his own campaign.

Democratic strategists see this as an opportunity for Newsom. Jim Kessler, co-founder of the think tank Third Way, suggests the attention might elevate Newsom’s profile among Democrats. Eddie Vale, another strategist, believes the investigation will enhance Newsom’s fundraising and media presence.

Newsom’s Position in 2028 Projections

Currently, Newsom is a well-known figure in the Democratic field ahead of the 2028 elections. His confrontations with Trump, including active social media engagements, have helped increase his visibility. In prediction markets, Newsom is the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination with a 24-25% chance. This places him above other potential candidates like Kamala Harris and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

However, traditional polling shows a different picture. A Noble Predictive Insights survey placed Kamala Harris at 27%, while Newsom was at 14%. Another poll by the Center Square indicated a decline in support for Newsom from 21% in the fall to 14% recently.

Details of the Investigation

The specifics of the Justice Department’s investigation remain unclear. Initial reports suggested it involves finances linked to Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, particularly concerning nonprofits associated with them. The inquiry appears to have stemmed from a whistleblower complaint handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento.

Focus has been on the California Partners Project, a nonprofit founded by Siebel Newsom. There is scrutiny over “behested payments,” where officials might solicit donations for causes, disclosed if above $5,000. While supporters argue these funds benefit public initiatives, others believe the system might allow influence peddling.

California politicians, including Senator Adam Schiff, have criticized the investigation as an abuse of power. Representative Ro Khanna expressed a lack of political concern over how the probe might affect Newsom’s potential primary prospects in 2028.

Newsom’s Statements on Running for President

Governor Newsom has not confirmed a presidential bid but has not dismissed the possibility. He intends to decide after the midterm elections. In recent interviews, he acknowledged considering a run but cited fate as a determining factor. His current term ends in January, after which term limits prevent him from running for governor again.

For now, Newsom views the DOJ inquiry as a political stage rather than a legal threat. How this situation develops in the context of the 2028 campaign remains uncertain. The Justice Department and the White House have refrained from commenting on the investigation.
