Iranian Tankers Navigate U.S. Blockade in Strait of Hormuz

Iranian oil tankers have successfully crossed a U.S. naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. This event unfolds shortly before the anticipated U.S.-Iran peace agreement announcement.

The tankers, named Diona and Hero 2, are subject to U.S. sanctions. They carried a significant load of Iranian crude oil, comprising approximately 3.8 million barrels, confirmed by TankerTrackers, a shipping data provider.

“At least two National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) VLCC supertankers named DIONA and HERO2 have exited the US Navy blockade perimeter carrying a combined total of 3.8 million barrels of Iranian crude oil,” reported TankerTrackers on social media platform X.

The NITC also managed to navigate a third tanker through the blockade. This tanker, a Suezmax, transported an additional 1 million barrels of Iranian crude oil.

In April, former President Donald Trump enforced a naval blockade around Iran. This was a strategic move following unsuccessful negotiations in Pakistan. The primary aim was to compel Iran to reopen the Strait for global shipping and to prevent interference in maritime activities.

The upcoming peace deal is expected to be revealed at a ceremony at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland. Although specific details remain undisclosed, Trump indicated that the Strait of Hormuz would be fully accessible.

“I think a lot of great things are going to happen in the Middle East right now. And very importantly, the oil is plummeting down and the stock market is shooting up like a rocket today,” Trump mentioned during the G7 summit in France.

A crucial aspect of the agreement is Iran’s commitment to abstain from nuclear weapon development, as emphasized by Trump. The enforcement of stringent policing measures aims to ensure compliance.

This situation is evolving, with more updates forthcoming.
