NASCAR Hosts Historic Race at Naval Base Coronado

NASCAR is preparing for a groundbreaking event this weekend. For the first time, the racing series will take place on a military installation, as all three national series visit the newly established road course at San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado. This special occasion marks the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy.

The Haas Factory Team is honoring the celebration with a unique livery designed in partnership with Texas A&M University. Their tribute recognizes former Naval aviator and 41st U.S. President, George H.W. Bush. This exclusive design will feature on Cole Custer’s No. 41 Chevrolet Camaro during the Anduril 250: Race the Base event on Sunday.

“We’ve been thrilled to help tell Texas A&M’s story the past two seasons, and we’re particularly proud to help tell this chapter,” noted Joe Custer, President of the Haas Factory Team. “President Bush lived one of the greatest American lives. We’re all better off today because of what he did for our country. For our team to race the No. 41 in tribute to him, and now celebrate all he stood for, is a rare honor.”

George H.W. Bush was notable as one of the youngest Naval aviators in World War II, joining the Navy on his 18th birthday. He served in the Pacific, surviving after being shot down in 1944. His grandson, Sam Bush LeBlond, commented on the president’s pride in such honors.

“He often said that having a US Navy aircraft carrier named in his honor was among the proudest moments of his life. It represented values that guided him throughout his life: service, duty, and love of country. I know he would be incredibly touched to see his legacy celebrated at Naval Base Coronado and proud to know this tribute is helping share those values with a new generation of Americans,” LeBlond expressed.

The visually distinct paint scheme on Cole Custer’s Camaro, commemorating George H.W. Bush, will be visible at the NASCAR Cup Series race this weekend. The event promises to be a meaningful tribute at Naval Base Coronado.
