The Vegas Golden Knights have faced a mix of success and criticism since their debut. Despite losing the Stanley Cup in their third Final appearance, they’ve encountered backlash from NHL fans.
Star forward Jack Eichel addressed the team’s reputation after a poll revealed Vegas as the most-hated NHL team in 11 states. The team’s rapid success, winning a Stanley Cup, reaching the Final three times, and missing playoffs only once, partly fuels the sentiment.
Additionally, the team’s aggressive approach in dealing players and coaches contributes to its polarizing image. Notably, they dismissed Bruce Cassidy just before the playoffs and restricted other teams, including the Edmonton Oilers, from interviewing him.
Eichel, traded from Buffalo in 2021, highlighted that players view Vegas differently. He stated, “If you ask guys in the league, Vegas ain’t on people’s ‘no-trade’ lists.” He emphasized the desire to play for the organization, noting players’ pride in representing the city.
Vegas’ appeal to free agents backs Eichel’s point. While it’s uncertain if Dylan Larkin, who requested a trade, had the Golden Knights on his list, the team’s reputation attracts talent.
