Mike Vrabel, former head coach of the Tennessee Titans, led his team to the playoffs three times but never reached the Super Bowl. The Titans came close in 2019, falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game with a score of 35-24.
Success came swiftly for Vrabel with the New England Patriots in his first season. The team made it to the Super Bowl, though they suffered a 29-13 defeat in February.
During a recent interview on Terron Armstead’s “The Set,” Jeffery Simmons, the Titans’ All-Pro defensive tackle, expressed envy over Vrabel’s swift success in New England. “Was I surprised?” Simmons stated, according to NFL Media transcriptions. “Man, I think we all would be surprised. First year in New England, and they go straight to the Super Bowl. I’m jealous. Just four years with you, and you couldn’t get me to the Super Bowl?”
The Patriots boasted a formidable defense, mirroring Vrabel’s tenure with the Titans. However, they also had the advantage of an MVP-level quarterback, Drake Maye, driving their offense.
Since Vrabel’s departure, the Titans struggled, recording 3-14 in their last two seasons. The team has hired Robert Saleh as the new head coach, hoping for a turnaround.
This offseason, Vrabel’s leadership abilities faced scrutiny, particularly regarding maintaining strong locker room relationships amid off-field issues. Simmons defended Vrabel, emphasizing his talent for building bonds with players. “Building that relationship off the football field is the biggest thing with Vrabel,” Simmons explained. “It’s the same with Saleh. Players will give their all when you foster those connections.”
As training camp approaches, Vrabel aims to establish strong team dynamics following a challenging spring.
