Mel Brooks, now 100 years old, is making sure his age doesn’t obstruct his involvement in the comeback of ‘Spaceballs’. Before filming of the new installment began, Brooks had a specific request: Do not wait to film me.
Daphne Zuniga, who reprises her role as Princess Vespa, shared this at a ‘Melrose Place’ 90s Con panel. Mel Brooks worked on the script with the writers. He made sure to film his part before everything else started, Zuniga told People. Brooks’ comment was, You better film me now because I’m 100.
The sequel to the cult classic ‘Spaceballs’ will bring back familiar characters alongside new faces. According to Zuniga, It opens April 23rd of next year.
Rick Moranis reprises his iconic role as Lord Dark Helmet, while Bill Pullman returns alongside his real son, Lewis Pullman, who plays their on-screen son. The cast also includes Keke Palmer.
‘Spaceballs‘, co-created by Brooks, was first released in 1987. At its premiere, Brooks was 60, and now, decades later, his influence on the sequel remains strong. The original film parodied ‘Star Wars’, ‘Star Trek’, and other science-fiction hits.
Brooks revealed that Rick Moranis’ humor was a cost during the filming of the 1987 movie. Rick cost me a lot of money.
Brooks explained that Moranis’ antics caused the crew to laugh uncontrollably, ruining several takes.
Rick Moranis shared that reprising his role decades later feels like stepping into a time machine. During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Moranis remarked, Looking at the old cast alongside new, younger actors, was like being in a time warp.
While surreal initially, he found the experience heartwarming.
