Governor Kathy Hochul was enthusiastic as she outlined the plans for a two-day maritime event to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. This grand occasion is set to feature more than 30 ships, 200 aircraft, and potentially millions of spectators along New York City’s coastline, accompanied by 20,000 sailors.
During the announcement, Governor Hochul acknowledged the attendance of Julie Menin, the City Council speaker. At one point, she inquired rhetorically, “Are any other elected officials here?” Notably absent was Mayor Mamdani, who reportedly declined the invitation to the news conference, according to a planning insider who was not permitted to speak publicly.
A decade ago, Congress designated New York City as a key city for America’s 250th birthday celebrations. The organizing body, America250, states they have maintained frequent contact with mayors and their teams from these priority cities to coordinate events.
