The Washington Commanders experienced a significant setback during Saturday’s practice. Laremy Tunsil, a seasoned offensive tackle with five Pro Bowl selections, encountered a torn triceps during one-on-one pass-rush drills. This injury necessitates surgery, as reported by NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo.
Tunsil’s recovery will likely sideline him for a large part, if not the entirety, of the regular season. Though initially, there wasn’t a sense of alarm within the team, testing soon confirmed the severity of the injury, pointing to the need for a serious reassessment of their strategy.
With Tunsil out, the Commanders face the challenge of adequately safeguarding quarterback Jayden Daniels. Last season, Daniels missed numerous games due to knee, hamstring, and elbow injuries. Now, Andrew Wylie will probably fill in at left tackle, while Josh Conerly will manage the right tackle responsibilities, joining right guard Sam Cosmi, center Nick Allegretti, and left guard Chris Paul.
In March, Tunsil secured a two-year contract extension valued at $60.2 million, highlighting his importance to the team.
