Kyle Teel Returns to Lineup Following Injury

Catcher Kyle Teel was initially expected to miss six to twelve weeks due to a sprained left ankle sustained on July 20 in a game against the Texas Rangers. “Immediately when it happened, it felt terrible,” Teel shared. “When the doctors mentioned 12 weeks, I prayed that night. I feel blessed to have returned much sooner.” Teel made his comeback to the Chicago White Sox lineup on Friday at Rate Field during a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins.

Teel expressed his excitement about returning, stating, “I’m ready to get going.” His season has been plagued by injuries, limiting him to just 19 games.

Manager Will Venable acknowledged the challenges Teel has faced. “His story this year with injuries and setbacks has been tough,” Venable said. “But we’re excited to have him back. His energy means a lot.” Teel began the season recovering from a right hamstring strain acquired at the World Baseball Classic with Italy. He also suffered a sprained knee ligament during a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte, delaying his return to regular games until June 22.

Teel played nearly a month before injuring his ankle in a game against the Rangers. He’s currently slashing .190/.271/.317, recording two doubles, two home runs, 14 RBIs, and nine runs.

General manager Chris Getz reflected positively on Teel’s recovery. “Feedback from Kyle and the medical staff is confident,” Getz said. “Although he’s faced a few lower-half injuries, they seem behind him now. We need him, and I believe he’ll be a boost to the team.” During his rehab stint with Charlotte that commenced August 25, Teel went 7-for-22, batting .318 with one home run and three RBIs.

Teel stated his progress in recovery, “When I went down, I felt close. As the week went on, I felt better. I’m ready to go catch every day.” As part of the roster adjustment, the Sox optioned catcher Drew Romo to Charlotte. Romo’s stats read .141/.239/.288, with five doubles, seven home runs, 16 RBIs, and 17 runs in 60 games.

Venable explained using Teel and Jake Rogers strategically. “For series with left-handed starters, we’ll have Jake start,” Venable said, “and pitch Kyle against the right-handers. Mostly, we’re facing righties, so mindful consideration will guide matchups.”

Teel is thrilled about making an impact during the Sox’s playoff push as they hold a lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. “I envisioned coming back and helping the team,” he remarked. “The best time to play is now and during playoffs. We’re taking one day at a time. The only game that matters is today’s.”
