San Diego Padres manager Craig Stammen provided insights into the decision to keep closer Mason Miller on the mound during Sunday’s game, despite troubles in the ninth inning. Miller, a standout pitcher in Major League Baseball, entered in the eighth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers during Game 2 of the National League Division Series (NLDS) and swiftly dealt with the batters. However, the ninth inning presented challenges, leading to loaded bases with two outs.
Despite these hurdles, Stammen opted to keep Miller in the game to confront Jackson Chourio. Chourio hit a single into center field, bringing in two runs, which secured a 2-0 series advantage for the Brewers as the series heads to San Diego. Stammen explained, “Going into the game, we were thinking of Mason for six outs anyway. Especially with how quick the eighth inning went for him, he was just battling the strike zone at the end.”
This season, Miller has demonstrated exceptional skill, maintaining a strikingly low 1.67 ERA over 70 innings and achieving 129 strikeouts. He also led the National League with 38 saves in 41 chances.
What does the loss mean for the Padres?
The Padres now face a significant challenge after Sunday’s loss. To advance to the National League Championship Series (NLCS), they must win three consecutive games. Their situation is further complicated by the likely absence of their top starter, Michael King, for the following two games as he recuperates from his Game 2 start.
Nevertheless, the Padres have a record of strong performances against the Brewers at home, having swept a three-game series with them in the later part of the season. If they play at their best, extending the series to five games remains a possibility.
Before considering Game 5, the Padres must focus on Game 3, where they will attempt to begin their comeback. Nick Pivetta will take the mound for the Padres in Game 3, scheduled for Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT.
