Kansas Democrats have chosen their candidate for one of the most competitive primary races in the nation, supporting political newcomer Adam Hamilton. Hamilton claimed victory in a primary with 11 candidates on Tuesday, positioning himself to challenge incumbent Senator Roger Marshall, R-Kan., for his seat in the Senate.
Senator Marshall, who is seeking a second term, is ready with criticisms. He has already labeled Hamilton as a ‘woke, big megachurch pastor,’ indicating that Hamilton’s sermons may not resonate with Kansas voters. Kansas has a long history of electing Republicans to the Senate, with the last Democratic Senator being George McGill in the 1930s.
The Republican National Party is not heavily investing in Marshall’s campaign, unlike in states with tougher contests such as Texas, Maine, and Ohio. However, Hamilton’s campaign is well-funded, boasting contributions of over $4.1 million since his campaign began in February, as disclosed in Federal Election Commission records.
Marshall’s campaign has raised slightly over $6.2 million. Despite potential funding challenges, Marshall remains optimistic, stating that his team constantly reminds him about being behind in the polls, emphasizing the effort required.
With the Republican Party focusing resources on races with vulnerable GOP incumbents, Marshall is not seeking additional financial support from major GOP committees, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee or the Senate Leadership Fund. Marshall expressed hope that these groups won’t need to intervene in his race.
Marshall highlighted past support from Republican leadership, mentioning, ‘Leader McConnell was super helpful last time,’ and expressed a desire for continued unity within the party.
