Debra Messing recently addressed her decision to support Bruce Blakeman, a Trump-backed Republican candidate for governor of New York, despite her longstanding affiliation with the Democratic Party. The famous actress from “Will & Grace” shared her thoughts in an Instagram post, expressing concerns about the current state of New York City.
Messing acknowledged the principles she has always supported, such as voting rights, LGBTQ+ community interests, and gun control. However, she highlighted her growing concerns about living conditions in the city, stating, “What has changed is how I feel about the city and state I love dearly.”

In the past, Messing endorsed Democratic figures such as Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Cynthia Nixon. Despite frequently criticizing President Donald Trump, she chose to back Blakeman due to issues impacting New Yorkers, particularly small business owners, teachers, and young individuals facing escalating living costs.
Messing explained, “The people who live in the city can’t afford to live there, we risk losing part of what has long made New York an extraordinary place of opportunity.” She expressed growing fears over public safety, concerned about violence on streets and subways.
Debra Messing’s decision stems from her assessment of New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s tenure, questioning whether her life has improved over the past four years. She urged voters to focus on the savoir-faire of candidates, saying, “Not: ‘Which party am I supposed to vote for?’ But: ‘Who do I believe will actually make life better for the people I love and the place I live?’”
Messing’s choice is rooted in Blakeman’s stance on affordability and safety. His campaign promotes pro-choice views and gay rights, aligning with Messing’s priorities. She commented, “No candidate is perfect. But on the issues that are hurting New Yorkers right now, I believe he’s the right choice.”
Despite Blakeman’s endorsement by President Trump, Messing emphasized that her decision goes beyond mere party affiliation. She declared voting based on personal conscience and priorities.
