The Kansas City Royals stumbled in an unusual display of fielding errors against the New York Mets. During Tuesday night’s game, an otherwise routine ground ball turned into a major complication for the Royals, resulting in one of the MLB season’s oddest scoring events. Even the Mets, who have faced their own challenges this season, benefited from the sequence.
With runners positioned on first and second, Mets outfielder Carson Benge hit a slow ground ball that reached the mound. Moments later, Benge crossed home plate as the Royals made three consecutive errors on the same play. This series of mistakes awarded New York an unexpected three-run lead.
Initially, Royals pitcher Seth Lugo fielded the ball. However, his off-balance throw to first base veered wide off its target, marking the first error and allowing Benge to reach base safely.

The chaos continued when first baseman Jac Caglianone retrieved the ball. In an attempt to catch Benge as he headed for third, Caglianone’s throw missed its mark and went into foul territory.
Benge, seizing the opportunity, rounded third and made for home. Third baseman Nick Loftin’s relay attempt also fell short, allowing Benge to complete his circuit around the bases. This three-error play resulted in three unearned runs for the Mets before the Royals could secure the third out of the inning.
The incident gave the Mets a 3-0 lead from the onset, without necessitating any earned runs. Rather than requiring the Mets to work for these early points, the Royals’ repeated errors handed them the advantage on a silver platter.
Intriguingly, despite this disastrous start, the Royals rallied by the fifth inning, tying the game at 9-9. This demonstrates the unpredictable nature of baseball, where despite early setbacks, teams can stage impressive comebacks.
