Kansas City Chiefs Eye a Promising Rookie for a Starting Role

As NFL teams take a break from mid-June to mid-July between minicamp and training camp, the offseason reaches its quietest phase. Fans can look forward to the start of training camp in three weeks, leading to the preseason and the regular season beginning the week of September 7.

To keep football enthusiasts engaged, we’ve provided training camp previews and analyzed top position battles for all 32 teams. In this installment, we focus on potential rookies who might secure starting positions during training camp, with a spotlight on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kansas City’s 2026 Draft Class

  • Mansoor Delane, CB, Round 1
  • Peter Woods, DT, Round 1
  • R Mason Thomas, DE, Round 2
  • Jadon Canady, S, Round 4
  • Emmett Johnson, RB, Round 5
  • Cyrus Allen, WR, Round 5
  • Garrett Nussmeier, QB, Round 7

The Chiefs prioritized Mansoor Delane by trading up to the sixth overall pick to ensure they secured him. Delane, an unanimous All-American and first-team All-SEC selection, figures prominently in their plans.

With the trade of Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City’s No. 1 cornerback position is open. While Kristian Fulton, Nohl Williams, and L’Jarius Sneed remain in contention, Delane appears to be the leading candidate for the role.

Delane’s performance last season positioned him as an outstanding cover corner in college football. He allowed a 40% completion rate on 35 targets, conceding only 165 yards and no touchdowns, with a passer rating of 31.3.

Highlighting his playmaking abilities, Delane recorded eight interceptions, four forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery during his collegiate career at LSU and Virginia Tech.

For the Chiefs to maintain their playoff competitiveness, a strong secondary is crucial against formidable quarterbacks like Bo Nix, Justin Herbert, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Matthew Stafford, Joe Burrow, Drake Maye, and Brock Purdy. Delane is expected to emerge from training camp as the team’s top cornerback.
