Jayson Tatum Discusses Jaylen Brown’s Trade
Jayson Tatum has shared his thoughts on Jaylen Brown’s departure from the Boston Celtics, labeling it as a ‘tough’ aspect of NBA business. Brown’s trade to the Philadelphia 76ers occurred earlier this month, involving Paul George and multiple future draft picks.
Tatum’s Reflections at Newton Community Stage
Tatum, known for being a six-time NBA All-Star and four-time All-NBA First Team selection, spoke at Newton Community Stage in Massachusetts. The event promoted his children’s book. The session included a dialogue with journalist Howard Bryant, where Tatum discussed the upcoming changes in his career, particularly playing without Brown next season.
Tatum felt the transition was ‘weird,’ having played with Brown for nine years, reaching the Finals twice, and winning a championship together. Despite not mentioning Brown’s name directly, Tatum emphasized the appreciation for their shared experiences.
“You find out that they’re no longer on your team anymore,” Tatum remarked on the unexpected nature of NBA trades.
Impact on the Celtics and Boston
While praising Brown’s contributions to Boston, Tatum recognized the need to welcome new teammates and move forward. Insight from ESPN’s Shams Charania suggested Tatum and Brown’s relationship was distant this past year.
Brown, drafted by the Celtics in 2016, joined forces with Tatum the following season. Their partnership led to a title win in 2024, which seemed like the beginning of a dynasty. However, recent developments have altered the team’s trajectory.
According to Celtics GM Brad Stevens, Tatum wasn’t involved in the trade decision. Stevens highlighted his own struggle with the burden of such decisions, expressed in a report by the NBA.
Trade Analysis and Future Prospects
The trade took many by surprise due to what the teams exchanged. The Celtics parted with a player of significant contribution, like winning the NBA Finals MVP in 2024. Brown recently led the Celtics to a strong position in the Eastern Conference while Tatum was hampered by injury.
Tatum eventually returned to action, playing 16 regular-season games and participating partially in playoffs. He missed the crucial Game 7 against the 76ers due to injury management, resulting in a loss.
