In Minnesota, the Republican primary for the state’s 1st Congressional District saw Rep. Brad Finstad face two challengers, Gregory Goetzman and Oliver Morlan. Finstad emerged as the nominee, continuing his campaign to retain his seat in the U.S. House. Goetzman, who previously challenged Finstad in 2024, garnered only 4.26% of the vote compared to Finstad’s overwhelming 90.9%. Morlan, with a background in his family’s industrial cleaning business, positioned himself as the political outsider.
Minnesota’s 1st District is one of four Republican-held seats and includes significant areas such as Rochester. It will be a battleground in the November elections, with Finstad set to face the Democratic primary winner. Choices include Alex Eaton, a math teacher and former union leader, perceived as more establishment, and Jake Johnson, a small business owner considered more progressive.
The Cook Political Report currently rates the district as ‘lean Republican’. This is a shift from what was previously deemed ‘solid Republican’, indicating a gradual leftward shift in urban areas within Minnesota.
The seat has been Republican-leaning in recent years but has a history of electing both Democratic and Republican representatives. Agriculture, health care, manufacturing, and the economy are predicted to play vital roles as key issues in the upcoming general election.
Rep. Finstad has held the seat since winning a 2022 special election, following the passing of Republican Rep. Jim Hagedorn. Hagedorn’s seat, before his death in 2022 due to complications from kidney cancer, was once held by Democrat Tim Walz, now serving as governor.
