Jacy Maranhao, the Brazilian soccer player, recently provided a health update following a troubling incident during a match. After scoring for his team, Coritiba, Maranhao celebrated near the stands at Estádio Major Antônio Couto Pereira in Brazil. In the excitement, he attempted to jump over a barrier to find his wife, who was present in the crowd.
Unfortunately, a trap door on the other side of the barrier was open, which Maranhao did not see. This led to him falling through the hole, resulting in an ankle injury. Despite this, he was able to complete the first half of the game before being substituted.
“I scored the goal and wanted to celebrate with my wife because she’s pregnant,” Maranhao explained. “But then I remembered it was my first goal at Couto Pereira stadium, and I also wanted to celebrate with the fans, but I hadn’t remembered there was a moat there.”
The goal, however, did not stand as it was negated by VAR due to offsides. Coritiba managed to secure a 2-1 victory.
Maranhao later expressed that the fall felt surreal, similar to “falling from a building.” Despite the injury, he was determined to play on but admitted his ankle was painful during the match. Following the incident, he shared a quick update on social media, reassuring fans that he was recovering well.
“At first it was more of a scare than anything else,” he wrote. “During the match my foot was quite painful and I couldn’t really put weight on it, but today I’m feeling much better and recovering well.”
Maranhao joined Coritiba in 2025 after playing for Operário in previous seasons. This year, he’s part of the team as they compete in Brazil’s Série A after their promotion.
