By September 10, 2026, several American military aircraft sustained damage following Iranian strikes at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, according to sources who spoke with CBS News. An A-10 Thunderbolt, also known as the Warthog, lost a wing in the attack. Additionally, around eight F-15 aircraft experienced minor damage but were reportedly restored to service quickly.
No U.S. casualties resulted from these attacks in Jordan. The strikes occurred after the U.S. announced it had attacked five Iranian tankers in retaliation for Iran targeting a U.S. Navy warship. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for attacks on eight tankers and two warships, including the base in Jordan.
U.S. forces stationed in Jordan responded by launching over 30 Patriot missiles to defend against the Iranian strikes. Prior reports from CBS News highlighted U.S. officials’ concerns about rapidly depleting stockpiles of Patriot missiles and other precision munitions.
President Trump stated his belief that Iran aims to influence the midterm elections. He speculated that the conflict might conclude shortly after the election, suggesting that Iran seeks a weaker political group in power to allow it to develop nuclear weapons.
Despite these assertions, Trump indicated a lack of interest in negotiating with Iran before the midterms. He expressed cynicism regarding Iran’s current state and suggested that negotiations might occur, but emphasized that the U.S. is not proactively seeking them.
“All they want is a nuclear weapon and if they had a nuclear weapon the whole world is in deep trouble,” President Trump remarked.
