Girl Scout cookie season is getting a new twist as the organization introduces dog treats for the first time. When the 2027 cookie season begins, owners can purchase specially made dog cookies called Patch Pals.
Patch Pals are soft-baked and feature a blueberry muffin flavor. These dog treats result from a collaboration with BARK, the company behind BarkBox. According to Girl Scouts of the USA, each cookie is designed with one of four ‘patch’ designs, symbolizing iconic Girl Scout experiences.
Ben Donati, an emergency veterinarian at Apex Vets in Silver Spring, Maryland, expressed excitement over the new addition, noting that it seems like a natural progression as pets are increasingly viewed as family members. “So, it makes sense to include the four-legged family member in the Girl Scout cookie tradition,” Donati explained.
However, Donati cautioned pet owners to avoid overindulgence. “We recommend that treats make up about 10% of a dog’s diet,” he advised. While Donati found nothing alarming in the ingredients, he emphasized that treats should not replace a complete and balanced diet. He noted, “Probably shouldn’t eat a whole box of Girl Scout cookies or Patch Pals.”
This evolution in the Girl Scout lineup acknowledges the increasingly human-like relationships between Americans and their pets. “There’s an emotional and psychological component,” Donati commented, adding that pets are often anthropomorphized.
Donati also pointed out the risks of overfeeding pets treats, which can lead to obesity and shorter lifespans due to joint strain. He suggested that owners use a portion of the dog’s regular kibble as treats during activities such as walks or training to avoid extra calories. “It’s crucial not to reward unwanted behaviors with treats,” he said, noting the potential behavioral impact.
Despite these cautions, Donati welcomed the addition of canine cookies, saying they could bring joy to both the sellers and buyers. Patch Pals will be available for purchase starting January 12, 2027. This new initiative stands as a testament to the evolving human-animal bond and promises to add an element of fun to the traditional Girl Scout cookie season.
