Iowa Senate Race Tightens as Turek Leads Polls

Iowa Senate Race Tightens as Turek Leads Polls

Iowa Senate Race: A New Poll

Democrat Josh Turek has gained a slight lead over Republican Ashley Hinson in a closely watched Iowa Senate race. This internal poll from Global Strategy Group shows Turek leading by two percentage points. He has 47% support while Hinson stands at 45%, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. The survey covered 1,000 likely voters between June 8-11.

Examining Trump’s Influence

Iowa has transformed from a swing state, which voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, into a Republican stronghold. It backed Donald Trump by a considerable margin in the 2024 presidential election. However, Trump’s declining approval rates provide Democrats with hope in the upcoming Senate race. The poll indicates Trump’s popularity is slipping, as 45% of respondents view him favorably against 52% unfavorably.

Close Contest Across Polls

Other polls reflect a tight contest. A Public Policy Polling survey for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee found both candidates at 46% support each. Meanwhile, an Echelon Insights poll shows Turek with a narrow one-point margin. In contrast, a GBAO poll from March highlighted Hinson with a four-point advantage.

Prediction Markets Favor Hinson

Despite some polls giving Turek an edge, prediction markets lean towards Hinson. Platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket assign her a significant chance of success in November, rated at 58% and 61% respectively. These markets reflect real-time public sentiment based on various factors, including campaign developments and broader political trends.

Profiles of Hinson and Turek

Ashley Hinson serves as a U.S. Representative from northeastern Iowa since 2021. Her prior experience includes working as a journalist and serving in the Iowa House. She enjoys backing from Trump in her campaign. Josh Turek represents a southwestern Iowa district in the Iowa House of Representatives since 2023. Before politics, he excelled as a Paralympic wheelchair basketball player. Turek presents himself as a moderate, appealing to Trump voters within a Trump-supportive district.

The Political Shift in Iowa

Iowa’s political landscape has evolved over recent years. After being a battleground in the early 2000s, Trump’s presence shifted it rightward. The state voted decisively for Trump in elections from 2016 to 2024. The Midwest as a whole shifted as Democrats lost support from white working-class voters. Winning these voters back is crucial for Democrats to regain influence in Iowa.

Economic issues like tariffs affecting local farmers and rising gas prices amid the Iran war remain Republican challenges. Despite early Republican leads, forecasters like the Cook Political Report classify this race as Lean Republican, signaling potential change.

Democrats’ Prospects

Historically, midterm elections challenge the party holding the presidency. Democrats aim to reclaim the House and face a significant challenge in the Senate map. Republicans currently dominate with a 53-47 majority. To gain control, Democrats target vulnerable GOP seats, notably in North Carolina and Maine. They also defend their positions in competitive states like Georgia and Michigan.

The hope rests on flipping traditionally red states like Iowa and others where Trump had strong support. However, current prediction markets suggest Republicans will likely retain Senate control. Platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket estimate over a 57% chance for GOP success.
