Security Challenges
During her appearance on the IMO podcast, Jackson highlighted the significant need for security, something she hadn’t experienced during her time on lower courts. She described the adjustments she now must make, noting the inability to engage in simple activities without precautions. “I can’t just go out in any meaningful way as I used to, and that can be a downside,” Jackson said. The role comes with the privilege of serving on the Supreme Court, but it also limits her ability to live a normal life.
Maintaining Impartiality
Obama inquired about how Jackson remains unbiased in her position. Jackson emphasized the importance of vigilance in avoiding conflicts of interest. “There are employees in the court, in the legal office, and the public information office who assist us in that way,” she explained. Invitations and engagements undergo scrutiny to ensure there are no ethical conflicts. Jackson stated, “We must be unbiased in our approach.” Avoiding situations that could suggest partiality is crucial for her role.
Jackson’s Path to Law
When asked why she pursued a legal career, Jackson reflected on her long-standing aspiration to be a lawyer. She viewed it as a meaningful way to use her talents. Raised by parents who were public servants, Jackson said they inspired her commitment to serving the public.
Supreme Court Security Concerns
Security issues have extended into congressional discussions. Justice Amy Coney Barrett and Justice Elena Kagan recently urged Congress to fund enhanced security measures for the Supreme Court. They emphasized the need for more police officers and improved physical and cybersecurity, addressing rising threats.
Barrett revealed personal experiences with threats, including receiving a bulletproof vest and enduring swatting incidents. These concerns signify a broader bipartisan worry about the vulnerability of Supreme Court justices amid growing political tensions. Justice Brett Kavanaugh also encountered heightened security challenges, particularly after an incident involving an armed individual outside his home in 2022.
