Incident at Virginia State University: Investigation Underway

At least five individuals were shot at Virginia State University (VSU) early Saturday, with one person in critical condition, as reported by university officials and VSU Police. A 19-year-old named Camron Harris was arrested for his alleged involvement in the incident. Police found him hiding on campus and charged him with multiple felonies, including malicious wounding and firearm use during a felony.

The Chesterfield County Police confirmed that Harris is not a current VSU student. Officers responded to a report of gunshot victims near the VSU residence halls in the 3300 block of Boisseau Street at 1:28 a.m. All five victims were transported to local hospitals, with four sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.

The university previously indicated there were multiple suspects involved. As of Saturday evening, no other arrests have been reported, and authorities have not shared further details on additional suspects. VSU, a historically black college or university located approximately 25 miles south of Richmond, is handling the situation with an increased police presence on campus.

Of the five victims, only one is confirmed to be a VSU student. This student sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has been discharged from the hospital. The victims, aged between 17 and 23, include four non-students. Police have not released their identities and have yet to establish a motive.

The shooting happened near the Quad Annexes student housing complex. According to VSU, there is no ongoing threat to the campus community. The campus lockdown, initiated after the incident, has since been lifted. VSU is continuously updating safety measures and providing support resources for its community.

The event coincided with the return of students to residential halls for the fall semester, with classes scheduled to commence on Monday. Rozia A. Henson Jr., a Virginia House Delegate member and VSU alumnus, expressed sympathy on social media for those affected. Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger also conveyed support and gratitude towards the first responders.

The Chesterfield County Police Department, assisted by VSU police, U.S. Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms (ATF), and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, continues to investigate. Individuals with information are encouraged to contact Chesterfield County Police, Crime Solvers, or VSU police.
