Makayla Timpson scored a career-high 20 points, leading the Indiana Fever to a 95-91 overtime win against the Atlanta Dream. Timpson made Indiana’s first three field goals in the overtime period.
Indiana maintained its position in fourth place in the WNBA standings, improving to 23-12. Homecourt advantage in the first playoff round is secured by the top four teams, adding significance to Indiana’s victory.
Although Atlanta’s Allisha Gray equaled her career high with 32 points, the Dream couldn’t overcome Indiana. Kelsey Mitchell bolstered the Fever’s efforts. She finished with 20 points, marking her 19th consecutive game scoring at least 20.
Caitlin Clark added 26 points and contributed two crucial free throws. Those free throws followed an Atlanta rally that reduced Indiana’s lead to 93-91. Clark also provided nine assists during the game.
In the closing moments of regulation, Mitchell hit a vital 3-pointer with just over a minute left, tying the game at 81-81. Atlanta’s last possession ended in three missed opportunities, leading to overtime.
Sophie Cunningham, celebrating her 30th birthday, had a pivotal moment with a basket and free throw, giving Indiana a 78-77 lead. The Dream faced additional challenges as point guard Jordin Canada was ruled out due to illness, with Jaylen Sherrod starting in her place. Atlanta also missed forward Brionna Jones, sidelined by a left leg injury. Coach Karl Smesko expressed uncertainty about Jones’s return.
Despite being short-handed, Atlanta fought back from a 36-27 deficit in the second period. Angel Reese, contributing 15 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists, led a 17-4 run, helping Atlanta take a 44-40 halftime lead.
Mitchell’s scoring streak was extended through overtime play. After a slow first half with only five points, she made key baskets early in the second half. However, a third foul midway through the third period limited her presence.
