House Candidates Spar Over A.I. and Trump in Contentious N.Y.C. Debate

Four Democratic hopefuls seeking to represent a key district in Manhattan clashed in the first debate of the race. The candidates competing for New York’s 12th House District include George T. Conway III, Assemblyman Alex Bores, Assemblyman Micah Lasher, and Jack Schlossberg.

The 12th District stands out for its wealth and cultural prominence in the United States. It includes iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and Central Park. The seat is a solidly Democratic stronghold and offers a platform for building a national profile.

The current representative, Jerrold Nadler, announced that he would not seek re-election after a lengthy tenure. Mr. Nadler has served the district for over 30 years and played a crucial role as the former House Judiciary Committee chairman during President Trump’s impeachments.

The Democratic primary will take place on June 23. Among the candidates, Alex Bores, an East Side state assemblyman, and Micah Lasher, a West Side state assemblyman, lead with Jack Schlossberg and George T. Conway III.

An Early Clash Over A.I. Policy

Mr. Bores has built a reputation in Albany by sponsoring legislation for the development of advanced artificial intelligence models. His bill faced significant opposition, particularly from super PACs financially supported by executives at companies like OpenAI who also support Mr. Trump.

This race has already seen heated exchanges both in forums and on social media. The televised debate provided a platform for candidates to express their positions and engage in direct discussions.
