This decision comes after assessing both Murray and third-year veteran J.J. McCarthy, who have shown inconsistency throughout their careers and during practice. Murray’s greater experience, now in his eighth NFL season, proved to be a significant factor in the decision, a source within the team disclosed.
J.J. McCarthy, a 2024 first-round draft pick, has faced challenges in securing the starting role. An injury during his rookie year and lack of starts raised concerns about his development at a crucial point in his career. With Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer also on the roster, McCarthy might become a trade option for the team.
Throughout this offseason and the early part of training camp, Murray and McCarthy shared first-team practice duties. With the start of the regular season approaching on September 13 against the Green Bay Packers, Murray now steps up as the clear team leader. He aims to improve his performance, as recent reports indicated some struggles during practice.
The Vikings hope Murray can replicate the success of former quarterback Sam Darnold, who turned around his career with the team in 2024. Darnold led the team effectively, before eventually moving to the Seattle Seahawks and winning a Super Bowl title last season.
