Greenland Urges Cruise Operators to Limit Fjord Trips

Cruise operators have been encouraged to reduce trips through certain fjords in Greenland due to resident concerns about environmental and community impacts. The guidance from Naalakkersuisut, Greenland’s government, highlights fears over noise, wildlife disruption, and preservation of recreational areas.

Naalakkersuisut recommends avoiding affected fjord areas or reducing presence there. The aim is to protect vulnerable natural ecosystems and respect local wishes for maintaining recreational spaces for activities like hunting and fishing.

The guidance follows efforts by municipalities and the government to establish zoning regulations under the Tourism Act. These rules, developed with resident and stakeholder input, will specify areas open to cruise tourism and those facing restrictions.

With rising interest in summer cruises to Greenland, popular destinations like Qaqortoq and Nanortalik are scheduled to receive over 20 cruise calls soon. Operators including Carnival, Oceania, Azamara, and others are planning visits, as reported by Cruise Industry News.

Online travelers discuss both benefits and drawbacks of cruising in Greenland. While cruises enable seeing many places quickly and affordably, they are acknowledged for pollution and wildlife disruption. For some, cruises offer an accessible means to explore remote regions like Scoresby Sund.
