Goo Goo Dolls lead singer John Rzeznik emphasized the importance of keeping politics out of concerts during an “Everything Music” interview with producer Rick Beato. He believes that fans come together for the music, regardless of their ideological differences.
Rzeznik explained his stance, saying, “I got people, fans, friends from every walk of life, every political stripe, everything. And I always stress, we got one thing in common because we’re living in weird times. We got one thing in common, and that’s we’re all here to see a show, and I’m not going to lecture people about anything.” This perspective aligns with a sentiment he shares with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, who similarly avoids political commentary during performances.
Entertainment analyst Christian Toto highlighted the potential risks that artists face when they infuse political discourse into their concerts. “Artists do risk alienating fans when they get on a soap box. That’s always been true, but it’s even more so today,” Toto remarked, noting the prevalence of political opinions in celebrity circles. According to him, audiences could become disillusioned, especially given the high cost of concert tickets.
Rzeznik’s approach finds resonance with fans and industry insiders who see live music as an escape from the everyday, rather than a platform for politicization. This was evident in Rzeznik’s remarks on AI-generated music and the resurgence of interest in the Goo Goo Dolls’ 1998 hit “Iris.” The band collaborated with Steve Aoki for a reimagined version of the song, and their 1998 album “Dizzy Up the Girl” is set for an anniversary re-release.
The focus remains on creating a positive concert experience. Rzeznik told Beato, “I’m going to play a bunch of songs that, you know, and we’re all going to leave here, and we’re going to be happier and better for it. That’s it.” The sentiment was clear: concerts should uplift and entertain rather than divide.
Despite the increased attention and acclaim, Rzeznik remains committed to this philosophy. His focus is squarely on delivering a memorable musical experience for all attendees.
