Burt Jones is leading the Republican race for governor of Georgia. He prominently displays his role in trying to reverse Donald J. Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election as a point of pride.
During his campaign stops, Jones often highlights his actions. “You’ve got to think back to who was standing up — who was in the ditch, in the foxhole — with everybody when we were fighting in 2020,” Jones remarked at a recent event held in a gun store in suburban Atlanta.
Jones recently secured the most votes in Georgia’s Republican gubernatorial primary, thanks in part to an endorsement from former President Trump. He will proceed to a runoff on June 16 against Rick Jackson, a billionaire with a strong pro-Trump stance.
Jones’s past actions during the 2020 presidential election remain a significant part of his political narrative. He played a crucial role in efforts to maintain Trump’s position as president. The New York Times examined his efforts using numerous documents from state and federal inquiries, along with public records and leaked materials from a failed criminal case against Trump and his associates in Georgia.
These documents indicate that Jones, a state senator at the time, collaborated with Trump’s campaign post-election, even holding discussions with Trump directly. During a 2020 rally, Trump commented on Jones, stating that he was “in my pocket.”
