Being involved in college football brings exposure to numerous narratives about the sport. Many, lacking basis, do not deserve attention. However, some narratives straddle the line between fact and fiction. Among these is the claim that the Georgia Bulldogs have lost their competitive edge since the implementation of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) laws.
Impact of NIL Laws on Georgia Football
NIL laws became effective on July 1, 2021. Despite predictions of a decline, Georgia excelled with consecutive national championships in 2021 and 2022. By 2023, Georgia maintained its prominence, dominating most of the regular season and only missing the College Football Playoff due to a narrow loss to Alabama. Their victory against a formidable Florida State team in the Orange Bowl resulted in a 13-1 finish.
In 2024, Georgia may not have been at its peak, but they achieved 11 wins, another SEC Championship, and four victories against playoff opponents. The 2025 team returned to form, securing a 12-2 record and another conference win before a close loss to Ole Miss in the quarterfinals. A record of 65-7 with multiple titles showcases their strength.
Recruitment and Program Health
Recruiting success is a crucial indicator of a program’s health. Post-NIL, Georgia’s recruiting rankings were impressive, consistently placing in the top six from 2022 to 2026. Claims that NIL has leveled the playing field, which supposedly hampers Georgia, ignore their strategic recruit commitments.
Influence of the Transfer Portal
Georgia’s recruitment hasn’t suffered. The transfer portal introduces challenges as teams can no longer bench five-star recruits indefinitely. Yet, Georgia remains among the nation’s elite teams. While they haven’t won every game, dismissing their competitiveness is unwarranted.
Perspective from a Rival
Despite being a Florida Gator fan, I recognize Georgia’s continued strength. Georgia remains a formidable force in college football. Any genuine decline in their performance will attract attention, but that scenario isn’t on the horizon.
