Frances Tiafoe Climbs Back to Reach U.S. Open Semifinals

After an intense four-hour and 40-minute showdown, Frances Tiafoe found himself at the U.S. Open semifinals once again. His last forehand passing shot sealed the victory against Alex Michelsen, but instead of celebrating with his team, Tiafoe approached Michelsen, who was overcome with emotion. The 21-year-old Californian, who shares a close bond with Tiafoe, sobbed as he embraced his fellow player.

Tiafoe, having experienced similar outcomes in past matches, especially in last year’s semifinals against Taylor Fritz, had climbed out of a two-set deficit and turned the match in his favor. He won with a final score of 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(10-6).

Initially, Tiafoe didn’t perform at his best. He managed only 35 percent first serves in the second set, putting him at a disadvantage against Michelsen’s powerful attacks. Michelsen himself had almost secured a straight-set victory; however, his game faltered, allowing Tiafoe to seize the opportunity and reverse the match’s direction.

Michelsen, ranked no. 46 in the world, demonstrated strong potential throughout the tournament and had previously reached the fourth round at the Australian Open. Known for his powerful serve and aggressive playstyle, Michelsen seemingly had the upper hand until his errors emerged during crucial moments.

Despite Michelsen’s success earlier in the match, Tiafoe capitalized on his mistakes. Michelsen produced two double faults at a critical juncture, which facilitated Tiafoe’s comeback. As the match progressed, Tiafoe refocused and overcame his setbacks, ultimately transforming the U.S. Open into his triumph.

Michelsen’s performance had been commendable throughout the tournament, defeating high-ranking players like Brandon Nakashima, Daniel Mérida, and Tomás Martín Etcheverry. However, Michelsen’s promising momentum stalled against Tiafoe’s resilient play.

In the fifth set, Tiafoe faced a 3-0 deficit but recovered by exploiting Michelsen’s missed shots. With determination, he served aces under pressure, rallied back, and successfully pushed the match into a tiebreak.

In the ensuing match tiebreak, Tiafoe maintained consistency, securing a spot in the semifinals by winning 10-6. This remarkable victory highlighted Tiafoe’s readiness and form to compete at the highest level, marking his third U.S. Open semifinal appearance since 2022.
