Officials in Colorado reported a tragic incident involving a climber who fell to his death on Sunday while climbing Castle Peak, a towering summit in the Elk Mountains south of Aspen. Castle Peak rises to an elevation of 14,272 feet, making it a challenging climb.
Mountain Rescue Aspen detailed that the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office was alerted about the fall, prompting a rescue mission. By 4 p.m., rescue teams reached the climber. However, they determined his injuries were fatal.
“Unfortunately, we witnessed the event. It has been an extremely sad and terrible afternoon for all involved. He did not survive,” said Rebecca Rees, a bystander who witnessed the fall along with other hikers.
Rees shared that another hiker, Robert, risked his safety to reach the fallen climber, trying to assist if possible. She emphasized that in his final moments, the climber was not alone.
The rescue operation was impressive in its speed and coordination. Despite the remote and challenging location, crews, including helicopter and ground teams, reached nearly 13,000 feet in under two hours. This was during a busy holiday weekend, further testament to their efficiency.
Rescue teams utilized off-highway vehicles and helicopters to access the area. After assessing the situation, a helicopter returned to Aspen to pick up additional personnel, ensuring a thorough response.
At 8 p.m., officials successfully recovered the climber’s body from the mountain with the help of 21 rescue members. Rees commended the responders for their compassion, highlighting their dedication at the high elevations they worked in.
“The response of search and rescue, the sheriff, and the coroner all made us feel like every single person matters. This young man had a story and we all care,” Rees commented.
