In New York, Justin and Tori Cannarelli lead a life that mirrors many American families. They share their home with two children, Cameron and Charlie, along with a dog. However, a duck named Louie sets them apart from most households.
Initially, Tori had no intention of keeping a duck. The plan was for Louie to live temporarily at her husband’s garden center. The story began when they sought a duck for the garden center and found Louie through Facebook Marketplace. Louie was initially hatched in a Long Island elementary school classroom. Yet, instead of ending up at the garden center, Louie became a part of their home.
Louie’s stay was intended to be brief, but he became an essential member of the family, especially for Barley, their golden retriever. Barley, who had started suffering seizures years ago, was on medication that stopped the seizures but dimmed her spirit.
Barley lost her spunk, her goldenness,Tori recalled.
The medication was necessary, but it seemed to alter Barley’s personality. However, with Louie’s presence, changes began to emerge in Barley’s demeanor.
The bond between Louie and Barley grew unexpectedly. As they spent time together, Barley regained her joy. Louie and Barley developed companionship, sharing playful moments and genuine friendship.
Today, they are nearly inseparable. Louie pecks at Barley, and in turn, Barley chases Louie; they enjoy wrestling and resting side by side. The Cannarellis observe the remarkable transformation and Cameron, their son, holds a theory.
Cameron believes that Barley wanted to be friends with Louie and found happiness through this connection, revitalizing her spirit and energy.
