On Thursday evening, two drones were observed flying over the Bundeswehr base located in Mechernich, Germany. The sightings occurred around 10 p.m. and were confirmed by the security surveillance team. Military police were immediately dispatched to the site to address the situation.
The Euskirchen police department has initiated an investigation into the drone activity. However, they have not yet provided further comments or details on the incident.
“Two drones were spotted flying over a German military base earlier this week, just two days after a drone carrying explosives was found at a cargo airport,” reported the German Armed Forces.
Recently, drone sightings have become more frequent at civilian and cargo airports across Europe. Last year, numerous mysterious drone activities over EU member countries raised concerns and led to flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers.
Earlier this week, a drone equipped with explosives was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a key hub for international freight. The drone was defused successfully. U.S. officials believe the device might have originated from Russia. This airport supports NATO operations, assisting in equipment delivery to battle groups along NATO’s eastern borders.
The emergence of these incidents aligns with intelligence reports suggesting potential provocative actions by Russian President Vladimir Putin, possibly extending into NATO territories. U.S. officials note an increase in Russian-linked activities, including drone incursions and suspected cyber operations, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
