Des Bishop, a native of New York City, has traveled an unusual path to success in comedy. Moving from Queens to Ireland to China, Bishop has now returned to the U.S., where he says touring has elevated his craft. Having relocated to Ireland at 14, he stayed until his mid-40s before moving back to the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic.
With a history of performing stand-up in various languages and styles, Bishop has now settled in New York. His latest special, Bridge and Tunnel, is streaming on Hulu and will soon be available for free on YouTube. It marks his seventh comedy special and only his second in the U.S. He notes a distinct difference in performing for American audiences.
“I’ve had many specials due to a career in Ireland that many Americans aren’t aware of,” Bishop explained in an interview with Fox News Digital. “It’s unusual because I’m from New York, but I spent much of my life in Ireland.”
With low previous viewership in the U.S., he emphasizes that his earlier, very Irish-centric jokes might not resonate with American audiences. Performing in America has required Bishop to refine his style, adding pace and punch to his narrative-driven performances.
In Ireland, Bishop honed his storytelling skills, a common style in Irish comedy. But performing in different American venues compelled him to sharpen his delivery. He believes combining storytelling with punchier moments has created a strong style.
Bishop mentions that birthplace is less significant in shaping humor than the topics and tones encountered. His ability to observe commonplace oddities served him well globally. This adaptability included performing in Mandarin for a Chinese audience, as seen in his TV series Des Bishop: Breaking China. This cultural contrast proved successful.
Bishop’s journey came full circle when accepting his identity as a person from Queens. This authenticity expanded his material greatly. The title of Bridge and Tunnel pays homage to his background. Bishop delves into Gen X nostalgia, appealing to those familiar with his references while acknowledging they might not engage younger audiences.
Married to fellow comedian Hannah Berner, Bishop shares the comedy stage with her. Berner, also successful, recently released her stand-up special None of My Business on Hulu. The couple supports each other while respecting their professional spaces.
“Comedians together understand the career’s demands,” Bishop shared. “We don’t impede each other’s pursuits.” Their partnership includes helping one another with joke refinement and social media strategies.
Reflecting on his career, Bishop embraces letting go. He notes experiences once thought disastrous eventually fade. With wisdom, he recognizes life’s ebb and flow, humorously referring to past perceived catastrophes.
