University of Arizona Suspends Fraternities Amid Investigations

This week, the University of Arizona suspended six fraternities due to ongoing investigations related to drugs, alcohol, physical assault, and hazing, according to local reports. Dean of Students Chrissy Lieberman announced the suspensions on Monday, highlighting that her office is overwhelmed with misconduct reports involving these fraternities.

The suspended fraternities include Zeta Beta Tau, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, Theta Xi, and Phi Gamma Delta, as reported by local outlet KOLD. In addition to these suspensions, all Interfraternity Council (IFC) chapters face an ‘Interim Activities Suspension’ until their leaders participate in a mandatory meeting with Lieberman.

Across the United States, fraternities have been under increased scrutiny. Cornell University is currently being investigated for its handling of sexual assault allegations involving the Chi Phi chapter. New York Attorney General Letitia James is overseeing the investigation, with former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates conducting an independent review.

According to KOLD, in Lieberman’s internal memo, she expressed gratitude toward those reporting misconduct and urging the fraternity community to act responsibly. The memo reaffirmed the accountability of every chapter and member for their actions.

The active suspension means these chapters cannot participate in, sponsor, attend, or host any activities, though club business meetings are permitted. Chapters in good standing will resume their status post mandatory meetings.

Meetings began Tuesday, with additional sessions scheduled for 8 a.m. Wednesday in Bear Down Gym, Room 104, and at noon on October 12 in Nugent 100, per KOLD.

Former Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg reinforced the appropriateness of interim suspensions when credible allegations like hazing or drug abuse threaten student safety. Aronberg emphasized the importance of fair proceedings when establishing severe punishments.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as new details emerge.
