The Kansas City Chiefs faced a concerning moment during their training camp as rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen experienced a collision. Despite initial fears, he avoided serious injury. Tests indicated that Allen suffered solely a shin bruise without any tears or broken bones, as reported by ESPN.
Allen was not the only receiver facing an injury scare. Xavier Worthy also went down during an 11-on-11 period. After catching a deep pass near the end zone, he landed awkwardly on his shoulder. Worthy had previous shoulder issues early in his NFL career, including an injury during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers that required offseason surgery.
“I hate to see somebody get hurt, especially on a special teams drill,” said Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub about Allen’s injury.
During a session focusing on special teams, Allen collided with defensive back Kaiir Elam while they were both tracking a pooch punt. Elam managed to get up and walk off, but Allen needed assistance before he was taken off the field on a cart.
Allen’s performance has been promising, with Chiefs coordinator Dave Toub noting his contributions both on offense and special teams. Allen operates as a gunner and returner, thus proving himself as a valuable player. Toub emphasized the significance of rookies participating in special teams until they secure a solid position either on offense or defense.
The Chiefs drafted Allen in the fifth round earlier this year, and he has rapidly gained attention as one of quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ regular targets during training sessions. Allen has been leading the team’s wide receivers during 11-on-11 drills.
