Dedication Ceremony for Officer Dorelle C. Brandon

On September 12, 2026, the Chicago Police Department’s 3rd District in the Grand Crossing neighborhood held a dedication and renaming ceremony for Officer Dorelle C. Brandon. Officer Brandon was the first female Chicago police officer killed in the line of duty on January 25, 1984.

Remembering Officer Brandon’s Legacy

The ceremony included emotional tributes from family members and colleagues. Retired Officer Matthew Brandon, husband of Officer Brandon, showed visible emotion during the event. Retired Officer Rita Pritchett performed a song in remembrance, adding a personal touch to the proceedings.

Unveiling of the Renamed Station

The 3rd District Grand Crossing Police Station has been renamed in honor of Officer Brandon. The unveiling ceremony celebrated her bravery and service. Officer Tanya Scott, niece of Officer Brandon, participated by pinning a remembrance pin on Marvin Brandon, her stepson.

Community and Leadership Attendance

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson attended the dedication, showing respect and support for the fallen officer. Andrea Liggins, sister of Officer Brandon, traveled from Orlando to witness the tribute to her sister’s contribution to law enforcement.

Officer Brandon’s Tragic Incident

Officer Dorelle C. Brandon was accidentally shot by her partner during a drug raid on the Far South Side of Chicago. Tragically, she was the second officer in the department to be killed within nine days under similar circumstances.
