Robert “Bobby” Dominic, a businessman from Morton Grove with connections to Chicago’s mob, has been charged with tax evasion. The indictment claims Dominic secretly held interests in a sweepstakes gaming company associated with Joe Berrios’ family.
The charges include five counts of tax evasion and failing to submit tax returns. Dominic allegedly received substantial payments through fraudulent entities operated by his then-girlfriend from 2014 until her death in 2020. After her passing, Dominic reportedly created another sham company through a new associate, referred to as Individual B.
The indictment outlines that Individual B was subpoenaed to testify but married Dominic to avoid testifying. A company called Promotional Consulting Inc., tied to Dominic, shares an address with Richard’s Bar and an adjacent hotel, both associated with Dominic.
Dominic’s failure to report over $1.2 million from sweepstakes companies is central to the indictment. This investigation links back to allegations involving former state Rep. Luis Arroyo and businessman James Weiss, related through marriage to Joe Berrios’ family.
The indictment describes Dominic as a well-known Outfit associate with historical ties to organized crime activities in Chicago. FBI records implicate Dominic in helping settle disputes involving Weiss through mob associates including the notorious Frank “The German” Schweihs.
The case also reveals prior collaborations between Dominic, Weiss, and Schweihs, further weaving together intricate connections among the involved parties. Prosecutors use these connections to counter arguments of Weiss being community-minded.
Weiss had previously been found guilty of attempting to influence legislation through bribery along with Arroyo. Both unknowingly interacted with FBI informant state Sen. Terry Link during the offenses.
James Weiss was sentenced to over five years in prison, and Arroyo received a similar sentence for his participation in bribery schemes. Joseph Weiss admitted to lying about mob ties and was sentenced to jail time.
